My son was recently circumcised and I was a big gigantic mess. From what I hear most circumcisions occur shortly after birth, however since my son was born at 2 pounds 6 ounces, he was entirely too small. We had to wait, and waiting seemed like it took forever. The week of his NICU release we would have normally received a note from the nurse to get him circumcised before his discharge, but even then he was only four pounds and the doctors answer was a big, fat, no. So we had to wait.
Following his release I called around to a physician recommended urologist to do the deed and learned that my son had to weigh six pounds. Not only that, but I couldn’t even make the appointment until he was 6 pounds. So tick tick, around the clock, we waited.
Once we had his twi month check up, we were happy to learn our tiny baby boy weighed a whopping six pounds twelves ounces. That was music to our ears. As soon as we left I called the urologists office and made the appointment. Great, we’re all set. Except the fact that the office was so booked, we had to wait an additional month. So now it’s October, baby boy turned three months AND he weighed in at eight pounds thirteen ounces. Yes, he gained a whole two pounds in a month. And I was absolutely terrified of my precious, adorable baby boy getting circumcised.
I didn’t realize I was so terrified until the night before. I thought about having to take him by myself while my husband went to work, and I started to panic internally. Upon arrival the following morning, the doctor and staff were extremely nice and comforting. I could certainly tell that they were used to overbearing and scared mamas. They gave me the option of staying in the room or waiting outside and I decided to stay. I already felt bad enough that I was willingly owing them to snip his body parts, so I at least thought it would be fitting if I stayed.
Now I did opt to look away because I’m sure the site would be unbearable. While numbing him up, the nurse could tell I was feeling faint. She asked if I needed to sit and I took her up on her offer immediately. I sat, and waited patiently. And to my surprise my baby didn’t cry! He was so strong and so brave, like the NICU warrior that he is. He went through the procedure and impressed all of us. Now that’s not to say he didn’t experience any pain once the numbing wore off.
So to conclude, here are my tips for any nervous mamas out there.
1. breath
2. Don’t let anyone or anything pressure you. Do as you see fit for your baby whether that be no circumcision, circumcision, you leaving the room, or anything else.
3. Prepare yourself for one to two sleepless nights, as well as for a very fussy baby. Give him grace along with yourself.
4. There no such thing as too many kisses and hugs.
5. Vaseline will be your best friend. Feel free to buy extra Vaseline and gauzes prior to. The doctor will tell you why 🙂
